Digital awareness kit for clinical practices

Category Campaign Read time 3 min Published 21 September 2026

We all deserve to be understood’ is a national campaign raising awareness about the vital role of NAATI-certified interpreters, particularly in healthcare settings. It encourages patients to ask for a professional interpreter rather than friends or family, and supports healthcare services in recognising the value of engaging certified interpreters as part of their duty of care.

Professional interpreting, NAATI certification and safe general practice

Developed by NAATI in collaboration with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), this practical resource supports GPs, practice managers, reception staff and other primary healthcare professionals working with patients who speak a language other than English or who are deaf or hard of hearing.

It provides guidance on when and how to engage an interpreter, working effectively with interpreters during consultations, the risks of informal interpreting, bilingual staff and AI-assisted communication, NAATI certification and quality assurance, and billing for interpreted consultations.

Interpreter card

NAATI has created a simple card to help people ask for an interpreter when they need language support. The card can be shown to a service provider to communicate that an interpreter is needed.

Engagig a professional interpreter helps make sure important information is communicated clearly and accurately. NAATI-certified interpreters are qualified professionals who work to national standards and are committed to accuracy, confidentiality and impartiality.

Waiting room poster

This poster can be displayed in patient waiting rooms of GP clinics or hospitals that provide free interpreting services to encourage patients to request an interpreter. Developed by NAATI in collaboration with LanguageLoop and AUSIT, this poster helps to raise awareness of the code of ethics and conduct that certified interpreters are bound by, and reassures patients that interpreting services are confidential and professional.

Clear communication between patients and health professionals is essential for safety, informed decision-making and quality care.

*A version of this poster without the ‘It’s free’ notation is also available in the languages listed below. To request a copy, contact communications@naati.com.au.
